Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in 2017, and quickly became the most streamed song within six months. The single a mix of reggaeton, pop and rock not only brought renewed interest to reggaeton, but also brought attention to Latin music generally. Billboard's Top 100 had four songs mostly in Spanish in 2016, compared to just two songs in 2015. At the peak of Despacito's popularity in 2017 however 19 predominantly Spanish tracks made the top 100, and in 2020 there were 41 such songs. In the wake of Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, popular artists began to collaborate with reggaeton performers. Drake and Bad Bunny were part of a team for the track MIA MIA (2018), while Madonna joined forces with Maluma to record Medellin, 2019 The gradual mainstreaming of reggaeton became an issue for some artists in the year 2020. Rauw alejandro and a young generation, however, wanted to preserve the style. The musician incorporated electronic dance music and other genres into his songs.
