Adkins was the daughter of a young single mother and was raised in various working-class London neighborhood. As a young girl she was a fan of contemporary pop music and learned to play the guitar and the clarinet. She came across Etta the mid-century rhythm and blues performer, during her teens and began to consider a career as an artist. She was enrolled in an academy for visual and performing arts, which was funded by the government. A friend posted songs Adkins composed on Myspace. Adkins was soon noticed by record labels and signed to a deal with XL Recordings in 2006.
